Bob Thomas Bible Study

Room FB-3

HISTORY: Organized 45 years ago by a group of adult men and women who were interested in studying the Bible. The class chose the name “Bob Thomas Bible Class” in memory and in honor of a former minister, Rev. G. R. (Bob) Thomas, who died in 1965 while serving TUMC as minister. He was a dedicated scholar of the Bible and was a dedicated servant of the Lord. Upon his death he left his vast library of Christian books to the church library. This class grew to be the largest in membership in the Sunday School in the late 80’s. Over the years all of the original members have passed away except three original ones who are still attending the class. Now the active membership of the class is 11, and the class is seeking more members.

STUDY MATERIAL: Adult Bible Studies is designed to help adults understand the meaning and authority of the Bible for Christian life. This study is published by Cokesbury, The United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, Tennessee. Each student has his own quarterly– a Bible Study Quarterly that has dated material. Members enjoy having dated lessons in order to keep up with the lessons if absent on a given Sunday. The Adult Bible Studies material covers a study of the entire Bible over a five-year period.

FORMAT OF STUDY: Three rotating teachers teach one month at a time. Dr. Joe Warren, Elna Smith, and Joy Godbold lead the class in study and discussion of the scripture each Sunday.

MISSION PROJECT: The Bob Thomas Class members generously give three times a year to the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco, Texas, for the support of the children who live at the home. This is the primary mission project, but as other mission needs arise, class members generously donate to these causes.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: Planned activities include dining out together the fifth Sunday of the months having five Sundays. The class appreciates the opportunity to join with the Cannon Sunday School Class in seasonal dinners, picnics, and a variety of interesting and fun programs. Class members also enjoy field trips with the OWLS (Older, Wiser, Livelier Adult Fun Group).

This class is a caring group of adults who continue to faithfully study God’s Word, minister to each other, do many hours of volunteer work in the community and are convinced that one never gets too old to serve and glorify our Lord in word and deed! All adult men and women are invited to join with present members and listen to God speaking to them through HIS EXCITING WORD – the BIBLE!!!!!

"The Cannon Class"

Rooms FB-7 & FB-9

History by Carolyn Hohl

Reverend John L. Cannon served as the Minister of our church from 1949 to 1951.  There was an active Sunday School Class for the men and also one for the ladies.  There was no class for couples, so a couples class was started and named The Cannon Class for Rev. Cannon.  It has been an active class ever since and continues to grow thru the years.

You will love this class of young seniors, ages from 50 to 90. Come join us for warm, friendly fellowship. Class begins with singing favorite hymns, and sharing our joys and concerns followed by lively class participation study.  This group's lessons and fellowship are led by individual members of the class. The material used for our study is the Cokesbury Adult Bible Studies.

We are a mix of ages, couples and singles, but we all have one thing in common-our desire to know more about God. We study everything we can find from intense Bible study with discussion of books written by modern, respected religious leaders, to comedy Christian videos. If you are looking for a group that will laugh and pray with you come check us out.

Open Doors

Room F-13

We are open and welcome our guests with the hope that you will find a place with us to learn and grow in Christ. We have folks from college age to over the hill, but everyone feels comfortable participating in our discussions. It is nice to have the perspective of such a diverse group of individuals. We study the Bible together and apply it to our lives daily. We love to laugh together and we care for each other in times of need. Open Doors class stays focused on the mission and the vision of the church, in hope to grow more Christ-like.

Seekers of the Word

Room FB-2

We welcome all who want to delve deeply into God's word...we encourage discussion and exploration of ideas while using the Bible as our main source. A study book is provided to initiate discussion. Come join us for the thrill and joy that comes from the Word; the encouragement we give each other; the laughter shared among God's people; and let us enfold you in the Word and the Church.

The Seekers of the Word are currently exploring Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians. This wonderful letter to the believers in Philippi centers on the way to find daily joy and a request for the believers to pray and help Paul in his hour of need. This message holds for us today.: “Our hope for joy daily is through faith in Christ. Our faith paves the way for us to experience real unity and joy. With the Lord as our model of love and grace, we, too, can enjoy oneness of purpose, attitude, goal and labor. We must support each other in Christian love. Paul’s message exhorts us to put aside differences, to embrace diversity and live in harmony with one another. Philippians can be summed up: “To live the Christian life is to allow Jesus to live His life in and through us.” Come join us as we experience joy, laugher, and explore the Word through lively discussion.

Led by: Judy Evans
